Hexagon Picnic Table

If you were to visit the Woodworking4Home website, you will be surprised by the amount of different carpentry project categories available for its members. The creator of the site, John Metz promised a whopping 14,000 woodworking plans for all carpentry enthusiasts. If you like to make your own furniture, the web site is an absolute goldmine for you.

In this article, I am going to do a quick review on one of the project plans. I've decided to review its picnic table project blueprint. The plan comes in a small PDF file about 1.5 megabytes. It takes barely 10 seconds to download the file to my computer.

When you open the file, you will see a picture of the completed picnic table. The design is a hexagonal or six sided table special created for picnics.

After a quick introduction, it goes to the detail part of the plan, the timber cutting list. The wooden members required for the project are used mainly for the seat and tabletop boards.

The size of the sections ranges from 1316mm all the way to the smallest size of 346mm. The ends of the member are to be tapped off at a 60 degree angle.

The most complicated part of the entire blueprint is the upper and lower frames connection. Since it is hexagonal in shape, there are a total 6 main supporting members to be latched together with bolts and nuts. When that is done, the following step is to nail the cut wooden members to the supporting frame.

If you are a novice, making the picnic table on your own would a very challenging task. This is due to its six sided shape where there are numerous wood boards with different sizes and angles. All of them have to fit perfectly within the main supporting structure. Nonetheless, for an experienced carpenter, building the table by following the Woodworking4Home blueprint should be an easy task.
